Proverbs 24:13

‘Eat honey, my son, for it is good;
honey from the comb is sweet to your taste.'

Honey is often mentioned in the Bible. Stories were told about God’s promised land for Abraham’s heirs, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey’ (Exodus 3:8). It is often used as a metaphor in proverbs and psalms. It got me thinking the other day when I was observing my cousin eating a cupcake made with sugar. He quickly transformed into a different person, apparent sensitive to sugar. It hit me, what if I found a way to substitute sugar with honey? Honey is a natural sweetener, and in fact far too sweet for many that if you use it in a recipe, it specifies to use less than the required amount for sugar when substituting.

Why are we eating food that is processed when God already gave us something far sweeter? Honey is a natural source of energy used by bees during the winter time when food is scarce. It is the purest form of sugar found in nature, so are we shying away from using it on a regular basis? This posed a challenge I decided to accept.

I wanted to create cookies that would satisfy one’s sweet tooth without using any granulated sugar. Instead I would use honey. Much to my surprise and pleasure, it was a success! The recipe is posted below.

Honey is created by nature, and offers vast benefits compared to sugar. It contains trace amounts of minerals, vitamins and is even thought to have antioxidants. Not to mention, since it is made from the nectar of flowers, it also contains pollen. One may not see why this is useful, but by consuming pollen, one is exposed to it which builds their immune system. God did not create us to lock ourselves away in sterilized cubes, eating only what has been “scientifically proved”, but to eat what He had provided us. After all, He created human beings to rule over all creatures on Earth. He specifically told them that to eat what was given. This includes honey.

I challenge you to find a way to incorporate honey (or more of, if you already have) in your diet. Remember that God designed the earth, which means He purposely created insects to produce honey.

1 Corinthians 3:16

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?"

We need to understand how important it is for us to honor God with our bodies. The verse above says it all- we ARE God's temple. When we invited God into our lives, we were also inviting Him into our bodies. He literally dwells in us. That's why we feel His love burning in our hearts.

So the question begs; how do we honor Him? It may sound far too simple, but it is not! How do you take care of yourselves? By doing a few basic things required to survive; we eat and we sleep. Is food truly important when it comes to worshipping God? Yes!

I am not talking about asking somebody to bless every bite you take, but to look at your eating habits and lifestyle. Okay, where do I start?

-Are you eating food that will help strengthen your body?

-Where are you getting your food; corporate markets or local farmer's stands?

-What's in your food- can you recognize all of the ingredients?

-Who are you dining with?

-Where do you eat- at the table or in front of television?

I am asking you to think about those questions and decide for yourself, "Am I honoring God with how I am eating?" Please ponder on your lifestyle as well and come back to read more about why food is an important aspect of honoring the Lord.
